Winter Birding Events

January 19 -- Winter Bird Survey

7:30 a.m. to noon. Teams survey birds in northern Lehigh, southern Carbon Counties. Contact us for more information.

Jan 26 to Feb 9 -- Winter Raptor Survey

Road survey of raptors in Carbon Lehigh County. Any date in the three-week window. Contact us for more information.

February 15,16, or 17 -- Feeder Watch

Survey birds at your backyard feeder on any of the three days. Previous feeder watchers will automatically receive survey forms in late January/early February.

March 9 -- Student Ecologist Awards

1:30 at the Osprey House. Award ceremony for high school award winners. Nominations due at LGNC office by February 9. Contact the Center for nomination form.

March 22 -- Spring Clean-up

9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Rain date -- March 29 Help with spring clean-up around the Osprey House and refuge -- gardening, cleaning out nest boxes, maintenance and cleaning chores. If we have enough help, we will also do trail maintenance. Come for the entire time or a few hours. Lunch to be provided.

April 19 -- Earth Day Celebration

7:00-- Bird walk
9:00-- Habitat Gardens Project work session and invasive species removal
10:00-- Spring Hawk Watch
11:00-- Native Plant Gardening workshop.

May 3 -- Natural History Workshops

8:00 -- Birding Workshop for Beginners and Families. Binoculars available to borrow.
9:30 -- Herp Search and Pond Life. Search for amphibians and reptiles and explore pond life using nets
11:30 -- Macroinvertebrates in the Lehigh River. Be ready to wade into the Lehigh River in search of the small aquatic insects upon which the food chain of the river depends.

May 10 -- Second Saturday Bird Walk

7:00 -- Leader: Jeff Frantz A special birding tour of the refuge looking for migrating warblers and arriving neotropical breeding birds such as Baltimore Orioles.

May 19 -- Natural History Hike

9:00 -- Join us for a hike from Lehigh Furnace Gap to the Osprey House through forest and the spectacular savannah habitat on top of the Kittatinny. Great views. Bring a lunch and water. We will return in early to mid-afternoon.

May 25 -- LV Audubon Birding at Lehigh Gap

Young Ecologists Summer Camp

June 16-20 -- For students finishing grades 6/7. Registration required. Contact the Center for an application. Deadline May 16

Summer Events and Programs

June 7 -- National Trails Day

9:00 a.m to Noon -- Trail maintenance day at Lehigh Gap. Join us and help with brush clearing, trail repair, and trail marking on the refuge.

June 14 -- Second Saturday Bird Walk

Wonderful World of Wildlife

Wednesdays June 25-August 6 plus 3rd Saturday monthly during school. 10:00 at Slatington Public Library for ages 4-11. Contact the library to register.

June 14 -- Birding and Whip-poor-will Hike

6:00 p.m. -- Leaders: Bob Hoopes, Jim Gabovitz. A hike from the Osprey House to the communications towers via the Charcoal and North Trails -- reach the towers near sunset and walk down Translotor Lane after dark to cars to return to Osprey House. Bring a flashlight. Last year we heard at least 10 Whip-poor-wills along Translator Lane. This is a 6 mile hike. Allentown Hiking Club/LGNC event.

July 12 -- Second Saturday Bird Walk

7:00 a.m. Leader: Jeff Frantz

July 12 -- Member’s Picnic

6:00 p.m. Potluck picnic -- bring a dish to share with everyone. Meet the Board members, hear an update on the Center’s Activities, bring your binoculars for some birding, explore the pond or river edge, or tour the habitat gardens.

July 26 -- Tree Identification Workshop

9:00 a.m. to noon. On this hike we will walk various refuge trails, learning how to use keys and fi eld guides to identify native trees. We will also discuss the different habitat requirements of certain species and thier natural history.

August 9 -- Second Saturday Bird Walk

August 9 -- Summer Clean-up

9:00 a.m. to noon. Get the Osprey House ready for the intern, weed the gardens, mow the grass paths, and do other maintenance chores around the Osprey House grounds.

August 15 - November 30
48th Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count

Join us on the lookout to help with the annual autumn hawk count as a volunteer counter or spotter, to learn about the raptors, their ecology and migrations, or just enjoy the view and the spectacle of the hawk flight. The lookout is staffed daily by our research intern or by LGNC volunteers.

September 13 -- Second Saturday Bird Walk  

7:00 a.m. Leader: Bob Hoopes

September 21 -- HawkFest

1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Our annual celebration of hawk migration and Appalachian Mountain ecology. This event takes place at the Bake Oven Knob parking lot and lookouts. (See web site or call for directions.) Learn about the annual fall spectacle of hawks migrating along the Kittatinny Ridge and how to identify raptors. Displays on the parking lot include live raptors, and live local reptiles and amphibians.

September 27 -- Fall Work Day

9:00 a.m. to noon. Trail maintenance, habitat gardens, outdoor maintenace chores.

October 11 -- Second Saturday Bird Walk

8:00 a.m. to noon. Leader: Dan Kunkle. Join us on a fi eld trip to Bake Oven Knob to observe the hawk migration. Meet at Osprey House at 8:00 or at Bake Oven Knob parking lot at 8:30.

October 18 -- Autumn Refuge Hike

1:00 p.m. Join us on a hike through the prairie grasses and the Chestnut Oak Trail in the ecological restoration zone on the mountain. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. This will be a six mile hike with a 600 foot elevation gain.

November 23 -- Hawk Watch Dinner

5:00 p.m. Date subject to change.

December 6 -- Holiday Open House

1:00 - 4:00p.m. Join us for holiday crafts and explore nature in winter. Bring some cookies to share and make a hoiday decoration for your home. Get into the holiday spirit.
